98% Want to Know the Salary Upfront

Barry Collins • Jan 30, 2024

OPEN LETTER

Dear Employers,

I want to address the critical issue of transparency in salary information within job advertisements.

While many employers claim to uphold honesty, trustworthiness, and transparency, there appears to be a discrepancy when it comes to disclosing salary details for job roles. In my opinion, openness about compensation is a fundamental aspect of transparency.

Research consistently shows the importance of this matter, with 98% of job applicants expressing a preference for knowing the salary before applying. Studies also indicate that a significant majority of candidates are less likely to apply for roles that do not specify the salary.

Although there is no legal obligation in the UK to include salary details in job adverts, the ongoing debate signals a growing recognition of the necessity for change. As we approach 2024, I encourage employers to commit to increased openness and transparency in their hiring practices next year.

By providing clear salary information in job advertisements, employers not only allow job seekers to make informed decisions but also contribute to fostering a culture of trust and integrity in the recruitment process.

Thank you,

Barry Collins
